Second in the RUNNING DRY series, a project inspired by the book by
former U.S. Senator Paul Simon, "Tapped Out: the Coming World Crisis
in Water and What We Can Do about It," this film offers a definitive
look at how the American Southwest is affected. Quoting narrator, Jane
Seymour from the film, "As in the rest of the world, significant
water problems exist in the Southwestern states because of severe
drought, urban development, agricultural uses and population
growth. The overwhelming need to solve these issues in the United
States and the world is crucial through education and planning. The
severity of the American water crisis cannot be underestimated."
According to Rep. Edward Markey, Chairman of the Select Committee on
Energy Independence and Global Warming, "... there is a growing crisis
in water in the Southwestern part of the U.S. and there is a real
question as to whether or not Lake Mead will in fact be viable in
another 20 years… whether or not the Hoover Dam will be able to
generate electricity."
Produced and Directed by Jim Thebaut --- 71 minutes
When Clouds Clear

This multi-awarding winning documentary reveals the courageous and
determined resistance of a small remote community in Ecuador fighting
to stop a proposed copper mine that would destroy their close-knit
village forever. Set in an isolated cloud forest of the north Andes
Mountains, the film is narrated by the founders and children of the
village of Junin who tell the moving story of how their daily lives
have been affected by the rich ore deposit discovered beneath their
land. Suddenly these once-peaceful farmers find themselves at odds
with some their own neighbors and thrust into a dangerous world of
corruption, murder and arson as they fight tenaciously to protect
their land and families. The shining heart of this remarkable story is
a community wise enough to know that money cannot buy anything more
valuable than the riches of their own way of life.
Anne Slick & Danielle Bernstein --- 77 minutes
The Cafe Muse will be open for dinner starting at 5:30 pm.
I hope you can join us.
